Why I'm betting on Azure sovereignty

Europe's sovereignty conversation moved from policy papers to procurement. Here's why I'm focusing my practice on Microsoft Sovereign Cloud and Azure Local — and what this site will deliver.

For most of the last decade, "digital sovereignty" in Europe was a debate. In 2026, it's a requirement showing up in tenders, board decisions, and regulation — NIS2, DORA, and national baselines like the Dutch BIO. The question organizations ask is no longer whether data, operations, and control need to stay within their boundaries, but how to architect for it without giving up the cloud.

Microsoft's answer has been moving fast: the EU Data Boundary, the unified Microsoft Sovereign Cloud offering, and — the piece I find most interesting as an architect — Azure Local with disconnected operations: a fully on-premises Azure control plane. Portal, ARM, CLI and RBAC running inside your own datacenter, with no connection to the public cloud.

Why this is where I'm planting my flag

After fifteen-plus years in IT and enterprise Azure architecture, I've learned that the most valuable ground is where three things overlap: real regulatory demand, deep technical complexity, and a shortage of people who have actually done the work. Azure sovereignty sits exactly there.

  • The demand is regulatory, not fashionable. It doesn't disappear with the next hype cycle — it compounds with every new directive.
  • The complexity is real. Disconnected identity, customer-run PKI, offline lifecycle management — this is architecture, not configuration.
  • The content gap is wide. Most of what's published about sovereignty is marketing or policy commentary. Very little of it is tested.

What this site will deliver

One promise: tested, not paraphrased. When Microsoft announces something in the sovereignty space, I want to be the first practical result you find — a lab, a working demo, the limitations I hit, and who it actually matters for.

Expect hands-on articles on Azure Local (starting with running it without physical hardware), sovereign landing zones, the EU Data Boundary in practice, and migrations of regulated workloads — including the VMware exit wave that's pushing so many European estates toward Azure Local.
